Long Island NY- Sustainable Seafood and Coastal Exploration

Flax Pond is a beautifully wild example of a salt marsh. Our trek started off discovering the flora and fauna of Flax Pond and learning about marsh ecology while getting a little muddy!
After our hike, we enjoyed dinner at the Mirabelle Tavern in Stony Brook. Mirabelle partners with the Cornell Cooperative F.I.S.H program to encourage sustainable options such as shellfish. In the evening we finished off our day at West Meadow beach to tag and measure some horseshoe crab the Cornell Cooperative Extension. Horseshoe crabs play a vital role in the ecosystem by laying eggs that help nourish migrating sea birds. Their blood is also collected for biomedical uses to ensure that medical equipment has not been contaminated with bacteria. |
"We participated in the hike with our 2 children and our whole family loved it! It was educational and the salt marsh and sound were beautiful! A lovely event full of adventure and good laughs, and we were able to make new friends along the way. We definitely recommend it!"
